  What does the Catholic church think of JW?

  on a trip to rome a few years ago i asked my friend (who is roman and jw) what the catholic faith thinks of jw.

  he simply stated that jw is tolerated by the church but that really not much thought is given to them.

  is there an official stance on jw by the catholics?

  The articles mentioned before seem interesting, but don’t constitute proof. At this point it is hearsay in some sensationalist local rag. There’s always some far away family member in someone’s vicinity looking for 5 minutes in the limelight.

  As far as the papacy, I recently heard there are at least 2 instances in the last 100 years where people say the current pope is not legitimate. Pope John XXIII and Pope Francis both had active opposition in the Church to their legitimacy, believing the current seat to be vacant. Coming from JW it may seem surprising, but that is actually tolerated in the Catholic Church, one had to do with the fact Pope John XXIII covered up serious corruption surrounding the Vatican Bank, for Francis they believe someone or something forced the previous pope to step down (whereas typically they must pass away before vacating the seat).

  Also, Trump wasn’t convicted, most of the court cases were not criminal, tossed or the one in NY the judge never even sentenced him. And now one of the networks (ABC?) has been sued and must pay Trump damages and publicly apologized for calling him a ‘convicted felon’ which BECAUSE it is untrue is defamation.

  As for the J6 damages, you should be able to prove that rather than just tossing out random numbers. According to FactCheck.org, there were of the about 1700 police officers and about that many of ‘peaceful’ (CNN’s definition, not mine) protesters, 1 protestor died from a stroke on the day before the event started, 1 was murdered by police, 2 police officers died from heart attacks days or even weeks later, 4 from suicide, some months later. That is stretching the definition of cause and effect, even the chief of police said he could not link the deaths of any officers to the riots. Also, there was a nearly 1:1 ratio for police to protestors, not sure how they would have gotten or caused hundreds of injuries, they could have arrested them all on the spot, they’re really unfit or again, you stretch the definition of injury to include that the report actually says the union reported that many feeling sick or injured the next day, this does not seem to be linked to any evidence, of the 170+ reported only a handful were deposed to testify to the fact they were injured, one infamous example was the (rather rotund) officer that was on camera to have simply tripped while walking by himself that day.

  As for the AI videos, all it can do is very short clips and even those are heavily edited to make them coherent. As you saw, one of the 30s videos took days to render on 200 GPU - that is basically a supercomputer, a machine with 8 of those costs about half a million. What we currently see as AI is the pinnacle of technology, but it has some major flaws we don’t know how to fix yet.

  The problem with this case is nobody can go to jail, this is civil. They will pay a fine, at best, and demand silence from the NY courts who will grant it because NYS is corrupt and they’re a multi-billion dollar entity, Letitia James may very well be driving a car with the CircuitCars logo very soon. They may even get the courts to gag the victims and attorneys in this case, as they did recently in other contentious cases.

  i am watching the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of ve day.

  80 years since the defeat of nazi germany in 1945. i find the interviews of the stalwart men and women who played their part very moving.

  these veterans speak with pride and sadness about their experiences, those they lost, those they fought alongside.

  The people from that era have all but left, truly, I’ve been out for going on 14 years, and year over year, I hear less and less about the people that once were there. Even people you thought would’ve never given up, elders, Bethelites, I heard about one person I knew that just stopped going after his wife died, at age 92, he now waits to die because he went to Bethel at 17 and now sits in a 1-bedroom welfare apartment. Waste of life, lost his kids because he didn’t talk to them after they left. Of all the peoples I heard of, if they haven’t died yet, they’ve gone with the exception of 1 or 2 families. One popped up in the papers the other day, for having a meth lab in his shed.

  The problem off course is that they somehow snag younger people, a different message, a different group but this generation does not remember the last, does not know or remember the promises. I don’t believe JW today are the same JW I grew up with, in a sense us apostates won, they moderated significantly, but in a sense we lost because our stories no longer match their reality.

  The tales of ‘75 have gone; the generation lines redrawn; the truth rewritten and with regret; the past becomes a silhouette.

  These are depositions, not the witness stand. These can be very long and open ended (and really boring). The problem for the WTBTS is everybody talks eventually, the problem for the prosecution is what the WTBTS attorneys will be able to seal or limit before it goes onto the witness stand (or public access). Basically the deposition is the long form version to discover what they will be able to ask you about on the witness stand, after depositions, both attorneys and the judge have to go through it and agree on what can be admitted, then the case still has to get resolved before it will become public.

  The problem for the ex-JW movement is that this won’t move the needle for true believers, even if you had video evidence of them admitting serious wrongdoing, at best you’ll get someone saying it’s fake and those are not the real leaders of the JW, at worst they’ll say it is theocratic warfare and they are permitted to lie because more than likely the witness stand is where the Witnesses will lie and commit perjury (that is where the depositions and witness stand testimony conflict), then you still have 2 versions of the story, one where they said something in a 36 hour long video recording, one where they said something on the stand and then the story will be ‘the persecutors of this world didn’t like the truth so convicted them of perjury’.

  There are no new buildings nearby? The scam is to keep buying new property with donations, get volunteer labor to fix it or build it, then sell it and pocket the money. They do this after about 20 years when the properties have appreciated in value and enough members have naturally rotated out so they don’t notice and complain.

  there are some things we don't know about existence and whether the earth is a simulation or even a creation.

  but we can do some statistical analysis on it.. the probability of a planet like earth existing in the goldilocks zone and having a moon that perfectly eclipses the sun is extremely low, but it's not impossible.

  the habitable zone (or goldilocks zone) around a star is the region where a planet could potentially support liquid water on its surface.

  @ballistic: the simulation theory is interesting but no different than the god theory, there is a god out there that is simulating everything and pretending it’s all natural. The question is why and how.

  My primary reason to think we are not living in a simulation is because of what we do when we make simulations, eg video games. We put both conscious and unconscious signatures, culture, in-jokes and other features that would give it away. We also tend to be lazy and eg leave buildings empty shells if we don’t expect people to go looking in them or set arbitrary limits (render distance) to conserve energy both in creation and execution. We also have to patch it and break things on a regular basis and people find workarounds and break the rules.

  It is very possible that we are in a simulation; but I don’t see any jokes or signatures or any indication we can break the rules.

  The thing is, fine tuning is not needed when you have a large enough testing grounds for your probabilities.

  We can only ask the question because we happen to be in the right place at the right time. What is the likelihood that you have a device in your hand that can communicate across the world and you are rich enough to afford these luxuries and you happen to do this on a JW forum: compared to the entirety of human history, that is a very low chance, your parents must have been really intelligent to have produced you at just the right time 40-50-60 years ago and joined the JW just so we can have this conversation, by the logic used above, your own parents must be deities.

  @joey: I am being pedantic, this group never became astronauts, they didn’t reach space. They flew really high, like that guy that jumped out of a balloon at that height.
